Cairo - Giza - Saqqara - Memphis - Old Cairo - Cairo
Five unhurried days in Cairo with your own Egyptologist: the Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, Saqqara and Memphis among the palm groves, and the old Islamic and Coptic quarters. Ideal if you have already cruised the Nile and want to know Cairo properly.
Most visitors give Cairo a day or two on the way to the Nile. This journey gives it the time it deserves. With a private Egyptologist and driver, you see the Pyramids of Giza and the treasures of Tutankhamun in the Grand Egyptian Museum, then leave the city for Saqqara, Dahshur and the ruins of Memphis, the first capital of Egypt.
The last full day is for Cairo's living history: the Citadel of Saladin, the mosques and markets of Islamic Cairo, the churches and synagogue of Old Cairo, and an evening by the Nile. Hotels, pace and extra experiences are planned around you.
Your Lilly Tours representative meets you at Cairo airport and drives you to your hotel. In the evening, if you are not tired, an easy walk through downtown Cairo with its grand old buildings, cafés and bookshops is a good first taste of the city.
Morning at the Giza Plateau with your Egyptologist: the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, the panoramic viewpoint and the Sphinx. After lunch, the Grand Egyptian Museum, where Tutankhamun's complete treasure is shown together for the first time. End the day with a felucca sail on the Nile at sunset.
Drive south through farmland and palm groves to Saqqara and the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the oldest great stone building in the world, and its finely painted tombs. Continue to Dahshur for the Bent and Red Pyramids, then visit Memphis, the first capital, with its colossal statue of Ramses II. Lunch in a country restaurant on the way.
Begin at the Citadel of Saladin and the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, with views over the city. Walk through Islamic Cairo to Al-Muizz Street and Khan el-Khalili bazaar, then visit Old Cairo: the Hanging Church, the Church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus and the Ben Ezra Synagogue. Evening free, or dinner on the Nile.
Breakfast at the hotel and private transfer to Cairo airport for your flight home, or on to the next part of your trip.
