Siwa Oasis
Five days in remote Siwa, near the Libyan border: the mud-brick fortress of Shali, the Oracle of Amun, Cleopatra's Spring, floating in the salt lakes and a sunset in the Great Sand Sea.
Siwa is Egypt's most beautiful oasis and one of its most peaceful places. Days follow the oasis rhythm: sights in the morning, a swim in a spring, and sunset over the dunes.
Siwa is a long drive from Cairo or Alexandria, which is why this trip has five days. We stay in a simple eco-lodge or guesthouse.
Long drive west from Cairo or Alexandria along the coast and into the desert. Check in at your lodge.
The fortress of Shali, the Temple of the Oracle of Amun and the Mountain of the Dead, then a swim at Cleopatra's Spring.
Float in the turquoise salt lakes, then head into the Great Sand Sea for the hot spring and sunset over the dunes.
Fatnas Island, the palm groves and free time in the market.
Drive back to Cairo or Alexandria.
