Grand Egyptian Museum: How to Visit

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) is the largest museum in the world dedicated to one civilisation, and since its official opening in November 2025 it has become a must-see on any Egypt trip. It stands about 2 km from the Pyramids of Giza, so you can see both in one day.

Our guides take guests there almost every day. Here is how to get the most from your visit.

What makes the GEM special

For the first time, the complete collection of Tutankhamun is shown in one place: more than 5,000 objects, including his golden mask, thrones, chariots and jewellery. Many of these pieces were kept in storage for decades. The museum also displays tens of thousands of objects from every period of ancient Egypt, in bright modern galleries.

What not to miss

  • The Grand Hall and the colossal statue of Ramses II: an 11-metre, 3,200-year-old statue welcomes you in the atrium.
  • The Grand Staircase: six floors of statues, kings and gods lead up to large windows framing the Pyramids.
  • The Tutankhamun galleries: the heart of the museum. Plan at least an hour here.
  • The Khufu boat: the 4,500-year-old cedar boat found beside the Great Pyramid, now displayed in its own gallery.
  • The main galleries: arranged by era and theme, from prehistory to the Greco-Roman period.

Buy tickets online in advance on the official GEM website. Some galleries and guided experiences have separate tickets. When you book a Cairo tour with us, tickets are included and booked ahead, so you skip the queue. Prices checked in October 2026 and may change.

How long do you need?

Allow at least three hours for the highlights, and half a day if you love history. Many of our guests combine the Pyramids in the morning with the GEM in the afternoon. The museum has restaurants and cafes, so you can break for lunch inside.

Tips from our guides

  • Go with an Egyptologist guide. The collection is huge, and a guide turns objects into stories.
  • Arrive early or late. Midday is the busiest time, especially in the Tutankhamun galleries.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. You will walk a lot, on many levels.
  • Bring your camera. Personal photos without flash are allowed in most areas.
  • Check opening hours on the official website before you go, as they can change for holidays and events.

What about the old Egyptian Museum in Tahrir?

The historic Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square is still open and is worth a visit for its old-world atmosphere and rich collection. The royal mummies are now at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Fustat. If you have a second day in Cairo, add one or both.
